Designing Identity and Motion That Amplify Creative Voices

Centering Artists, Elevating Voices
CBC The Arts is a national platform that spotlights artists and explores the stories behind their work, with a focus on BIPOC and LGBTQ+ creators. The show offers space for dialogue, discovery, and process—an inclusive, intelligent arts program that pushes beyond surface-level coverage.
To support the launch, CBC needed a visual identity and broadcast graphics package that matched the creativity and depth of its content.
The Challenge: Design a Visual Language That Reflects the Art It Covers
The creative direction had to:
- Reflect the diversity and vibrancy of the artists featured
- Support both in-depth interviews and fast-paced segments
- Be flexible across screen formats, social content, and episode builds
- Avoid clichés of arts programming, leaning instead into contemporary culture, minimalism, and editorial edge
Our Approach: Editorial Simplicity with Cultural Energy
Under Jan Werthwein’s creative direction, the identity and motion system was built to feel stylish, contemporary, and content-forward—allowing the art and voices of the show to take centre stage.

Logo & Identity
A modern logomark with a clean, modular design system
Neutral colour palette paired with pops of vibrant accent tones
Editorial-style typography inspired by print culture, art books, and gallery catalogues
Motion Graphics Package
Subtle transitions and layered GFX elements to add movement without overwhelming content
Modular templates for lower thirds, name keys, segment intros, and story transitions
Built for flexibility across broadcast, CBC Gem, and social snippets
The package works behind the scenes—enhancing the rhythm and style of the show without overshadowing its purpose.
The Outcome: A Platform as Bold as the Artists It Showcases
The final graphics package helped set the tone for CBC The Arts: intelligent, inclusive, and visually refined. It allowed the show to:
- Feel cohesive and high-production across multiple platforms
- Support a range of formats from artist interviews to topical cultural conversations
- Reflect the values of representation, creativity, and thoughtful storytelling

Why It Matters to Locality
This project reflects Locality’s belief that design should never compete with the story—it should serve it. For CBC The Arts, that meant building a brand and graphics system that celebrated artists without flattening them.
This work is a reminder that design is cultural infrastructure—the scaffolding that helps important stories find their voice and their audience.
